Although, we open at 5:55pm, we will start the presentation at 6pm.
Hi everyone, Adam Keys hear from the Dean of students office again with another web and R this evening. We're going to cover academic advising care clerk little bit of the curriculum. Some of my far more skilled professionals in this subject matter and I are in the room with Maine. I will have them introduce themselves in just a second their roles. Here Clark and then we'll get started. But as a reminder you're Welcome to submit questions right there to the chat box on monitor that as we go if it is anything that you don't want displayed as your question just write private.
Before the question and I will hide it and try to cover the subject matter without disclosing your question.
Hi my name is Yvette Walters and the associate directed the academic advising center.
Hi I'm Cheryl in bone, and I'm the director of academic support.
Um so that and I have a lot of things that we want to just go over with you today about some basics in terms of advising the summer advising and course registration process, but wanted to start off with just a friendly reminder to complete our Moodle tutorial. We're not going to walk through the whole process for that step by step. But if students. Go to the first year To Do List. They can find some instructions for how to access this tutorial.
They can log into Moodle using their same. Clark log in the same username and password that they use for their email address and then they can come into this page login and then on the next slide. You can see they'll be course. Listed there for advising 2019 and if they click into that they'll be able to work through a full tutorial that gives them some of what we're going to talk about. But in a lot more depth and help them schedule meetings with their advisors so they can actually get registered for classes.
So if you are a student and you haven't done that. Yet do it. And if you are a parent of a student definitely. Niger student to do that as soon as possible. I would say if you're the parent of a student don't do it. It's going to be really boring for you so don't feel the need to log into any of.
With you of the clockwork lemon if you were here. I cloud when you open house. You may have already heard some of this information. But we still want to share this information with you again. And for those who were not able to attend so the first thing we're going to talk about it o'clock curriculum and what that is all about the cloud curriculum. Here is based on the philosophy of the leap process, which is basically the leap liberal arts and effective practice, which is pairing classroom.
Learning opportunity with a learning opportunities with the practical experiences that are available.
So this, this slide really just outline some of those basic requirements. Those are all in a lot more detail on the Moodle tutorial. But this is just a nice snapshot of perspective courses. All students will need to take a course in each of those areas as well as courses in the critical thinking area inclusion requirement intensive as well.
So one of the requirements of the Clark curriculum is the program of problem of practice and the otherwise accommodating capstone. The programmer problem. A practice course is taking what you've learned.
Um in the classroom probably something like an internship work with faculty members doing external works will be able to give you more practical skills where you're able to work with outside organizations. It takes space within an academic content. You will be working with faculty LED based team to investigate complex questions and problems or challenges that have significance beyond.
The borders of the clock compass most problem of practice courses enable students to work side by side with faculty. Graduate students alumni an expert at local and global organization and through the program problem the practice courses.
That you'll be taking you be able to use those skills to make a difference.
When you get out in the work world.
They integrate integrate with their curriculum, giving you the chance to use what you learn a Clark to makes significant meaningful contribution with the projects that you're working with over the companies that you're working with.
Culminating capstone courses are required here by all clocks students and their ticket is basically taking what you have learned through the full years here that you hear a Clark and put all of that together to show.
The faculty member even yourself in the world watch you done doing that I'm here at Clark. This would help it to prove the world that you are ready to make a significant impact upon graduation. You complete the capstone in your major in dependently or all as a group. This really involve advanced work addressing significant issues problems or theme in your field or in the world, it can be in the form of.
This is our project in consultation with the faculty advisor, which will help define and carry forward the project of your own initiative.
Alright so I think one of the things that comes up a lot for students in the transition to Clark and to college in general is understanding what academic advising means and who all these different advisors are you know, I think a lot of high schools. You work with your guidance counselor or somebody of that nature does electric courses. So you might not be sure who to turn to so this slide just outlines some different advisors who you might connect with throughout your journey here.
So Uhm Pre Major Advisors are going to be for first year students and 1st semester sophomore students before they've declared a major even if they know what they're probably headed towards they'll be working with the summer visor as most of you know throughout the summer to sign up for courses, and then once they register for their first year intensive which will take place in the fall semester. The professor for that course will become their advisor up until when they declare a major.
One students declare a major they'll have an advisor within that Department so somebody who studying management. For example, would have a management professor serving as their academic advisor and they'll work with them through graduation to complete all of their required coursework. We also have some different pre professional advisors on campus. So folks who are considering pre. Med pre law pre engineering. We want to connect them with somebody who's a little bit more specialized in those areas to make sure they're on track for whatever programs are pursuing.
After they complete their degree at Clark.
And then there's also some supplemental services. In addition to those so basically everybody on the left hand side is going to help with choosing courses and then everybody on the right hand side can can provide some supplemental support so student Accessibility services for folks who are registered without office. We have advisors in academic support whether students are on academic probation or not they can work with us to talk about academic skill building. Multicultural first generation student support. They have staff and their office and then of course event.
In the academic advising center can provide supplemental support as well.

Can I use FaceTime, Google Hangouts or a phone call instead of Skype for my advisor meeting?
So we do have a student asking us about maybe another form of communication with their advisor outside of potentially using Skype have we any answer to that whether the student can just use a phone call or FaceTime or anything that's really.
Yeah, I that's definitely possible. We tend to encourage Skype if students are comfortable with getting face to FaceTime with their advisor. But if folks are more comfortable with a phone call or did use a different platform they should just email their summer advisor and make those arrangements.
So we have a lot of students who are doing.
Do you want in Romans or some sort of academic work? Maybe in a University or college or they doing a piece course. So here are Clark students are allowed to first students coming in loud command with maximum of 4 advance. Standing credits and we awarded up to pee at the program of reverse this requirement that shown in briefly mentioned earlier.
Adam Keyes
06:09:51 PM
Totally possible. Simply email with your Summer Adviser when scheduling and come up with a plan between the two of you.
So each of clock causes equivalent to 4. Semesters credit whereas we have some University courses outside of clock that are.
Three credit courses when their transfer. Andover transmits .75 of the unit. But there were still fulfill the requirements of whatever cause their full there taking so, so for instance, if you taking in psychology. Intro psychology at a University Ann is the three credit course. It would transfer .75 unit of o'clock. The unit and sorry but it will cover the whole requirements of Psych 101 here.
So you will not have to retake that course or do anything to make that .25 that is missing. We do have students will often times will take more than the 4 units and what we try to do is to maximize, though, so if you for instance, have at least maybe 6:00 or 7:00 AP scores.
We will try to maximize those as much as possible, because we have many of those. AP scores that are prerequisites to courses here, So what we will do we would break them down an award you. Perhaps we have a unit each course or .25 depending? How many you have to equal to 4 amount because we want to be able to show that you've had that experience in those courses and will not have to retake those courses. Besides the college courses or a Peace Corps. We also take courses from the IB we take.
Alec Tarnowski
06:11:20 PM
How/where do you send IB diploma results to Clark
Any form of academic workers students may take before they you know before they finished high school. If you have an Ivy or if you have a College Board.
College Board AP score or if you have a University or college transcript. You can send those of the academic advising center here o'clock University will there be evaluated.
And what email do you want them to use for that advising unclog u.edu group?
Adam Keyes
06:12:09 PM
Directly to Academic Advising, the email is advising@clarku.edu
So something else that tends to come up alot, um is related to undecided majors. Of course, every student is coming in technically as an undeclared major just because we don't allow students to declare their major until their sophomore year. But a lot of students come in with some idea or have narrowed it down to one or 2 potential majors and then there are others who really just have no idea what major they like to pursue down the road so we wanted to speak to just some.
Potential suggestions for those who are looking for some of that guidance. We definitely recommend doing some exploring I'm taking courses in different departments and trying different things out. The PLS courses that we mentioned before those are really good opportunity for that exploration, but then most students also have room typically within their schedule for electives as well so even if of course doesn't fulfill apilas requirement, but they want to take a psychology course or something knew just to learn more about that subject.
Definitely encourage them to do that particular within their first year, keeping track having a good sense of self and you know, there are some majors that they students might know they definitely don't want to major in and that's a good place to start is just kind of keeping a list and crossing some things off modeling opportunities connecting with somebody in the field connecting with faculty members in different departments and just learning more about different areas, we do a majors fair every year, a recently.
Every sound of nuns I'm sorry every fall every fall so that will be something to lookout for this fall. For those who are really unsure about a major to come to that and learn more about the different majors that are offered here and what each of those experiences would look like and then definitely all of our undecided. Major is want to be really mindful of the deadline so that they have a timeline for when I'll make that decision by and they can turn in all their paperwork on time and the deadline for the image is the end of US sophomore year. We wanted to be mindful of that we don't want you to start your.
Junior here and not realizing where you're going or what you wanna do. I haven't taken any advantage of any of the opportunities are available, so at the end of the sophomore year is the required time for you to do so, so like Sheldon said start exploring early take advantage of the summer opportunities that you may find out you're at home when you're here o'clock. You may want to do an internship something practical skills, so that whiten your sophomore you would know exactly what direction you like to go into.
So we do have a question coming up about sort of the transition from high school into college around IE peas or individual education plans that students may have had and so I do think it's a good space for us to cover sort of the major difference between college and University life compared to high school life and it's something we did touch on a little bit in the.
Counseling session actually 'cause it came up there, but also we will have student Accessibility services here to do a web and R in the near future to talk about resources that that office provides and that is the place to go to when making any sort of transition that requires a specific accommodation that office would work with the student to obtain any documentation necessary in some cases, they can even assist them in getting testing around something that the student where the family may feel.
Is impeding the students progress and capability to perform well?
You know one of the major differences in this is always the simplest way for us to say it. No accommodation can eliminate the fundamental requirements of the course right so while we may need to make a replacement of something or there may be to be an accommodation made for the amount of time that a student has to take an exam that student would still need to take that exam. We don't necessarily say that that diagnosis and wore a combination needs eliminate the requirement to cover the course content so you definitely want to work with student Accessibility service.
Says come up with reasonable accommodations that might help the individual come to a better way to have a successful academic career.

Are all First-Year Intensive classes small enrollment classes or are some of them classes with lots of students?
And then I see another question about FY eyes and so surely maybe you want to take a little of that. It's about are they all small enrollment classes or some of them a lot of students so the first year intensive.
That is a first step in your lip curriculum is required. You are required to take a first year intensive and that is required by all first year. Incoming students and the first really intensive courses. They helped you build the intellectual and social and emotional foundation that you would need to hear to thrive at Clark and beyond. They're very small classes probably between 16 to 20 students. This allow you to build your career by developing a close relationship with the faculty member.
Well, perhaps a group of your peers.
I think the majority of them are only for 1st is we may have maybe 1:00 or 2:00. That's called a hybrid, which is a section. Perhaps for returning students where we try to have very, very little of those because you want a student to be able to be with the group of their peers and forcing covering group and therefore not mix with returning students.
But no matter what Frost you intensive you take you learned.
In a supportive and a welcome environment and you build the crucial skills that you need the critical thinking skills writing debating all of that will help to increase your confidence and success in the other courses that you may be taking there are 3 types of the frosted intensive that we try to have one of them each of them fulfill the first ones that topic based where you will focus on.
Maybe an academic discipline such a history or philosophy or music.
Where there was stretched disciplines across maybe addressing some social issues and intellectual debates from multiple perspective is also the research oriented for Siri intensive where you get a taste of what it's like to do some actual field work from frame your question to gathering and analyzing the data drawing conclusions and presenting funding. The findings that you've come up with what analyzing the data there's introduction to.
Discipline does the final category that we have and some of the FY I servers introduction to specific disciplines and potentially that probably address your major academic interest or what major is thinking about going these courses. Maybe requisite to a higher level courses such as maybe introduction to chemistry. If you're thinking about premium or going into that field.
Depending on what ever major you're going into an FY I can be. And it's an opportunity to get started in that required field. If you were thinking about perhaps going into psychology. We often have psychology for us if intensive that can get you in the information we have.
Management item management with an introduction recourse to the management measures if you thinking about going through.
To become a management major that it's a foundation course I would get you into the door. But like I said that is, they're very, very small courses 16 to 20 at the Max.
Charlie everything you like to have sure maybe just as a as in as an FY. I sorry I think I'm funny but a heads up so that like event described the FY. I course itself. Academically is going to transition students to kind of academic rigor of college and then there's also kind of an experiential component that is attached to all of these courses so.
Every student who is taking FYI which is every first year student is also going to have the opportunity to participate in some different workshops related to getting involved on campus and getting to know the Wooster community and growing and developing study skills and time management skills and connecting with alumni and things of that nature so students will have some choices to participate and things like that, which will count as part of their grade and that's for each FY. I so those those types of experiences will be consistent and that will all be done with the same cohort of students to.
We know that some of you may have already decided as to what your major is going to be.
If you have any questions at all about what causes should I take what question I avoid at the first year. What do I need to do?
Adam Keyes
06:21:21 PM
For those interested in the advice on selecting a major, you should be able to click here: www.clarku.edu/offices/aac/advice/
Is there a website that will give you some information that would help you figure out the courses? Where do you start? What should I was my advice? What should I take in my first year or my second year and that is if you go to the clock website. I've www.parkview.edu/offices slash AC advice. You will get information and advice on every major that cloud office that would have guided towards making a choice of making a selection of beer courses.
Folks were going to stay around in answer a few more questions cover. Some things that might be on your mind that might not have been covered here directly with the slides. I think one that I know came up in the inbox earlier today was just sort of what is registering for my second semester look like So what was that process going to be? I mean, I'm not going to. I'm not going To Do List or a local website or a model to go through and So what should I expect around that.
So that presume intensive that you choose. The faculty invite the faculty teaching that class world. Video faculty advisor. You will be pre, registering for your classes around November. We will be required to make an appointment with your faculty advisor list. Of course, is that you are interested in the registers office usually put out a list right before the advising session, so you'll be able to see what courses available. See does anything interesting that you want to take there may be a second part of the sequence of course.
Say for instance, if you're taking biology 101 and you go in and you want to take biology 1:00 or 2:00 that would be under grade you be able to take that course that happens around November. If you're unsure as to what course you should take we always available at the academic advising center to help you at least for the initial list. Of course, is that you would be interested in taking or you should be taking so when you get to your meeting with your advisor. You would already have at least done the legwork see what causes.
And then the advisor will also review those courses with you to make sure that those are appropriate.
Folks I'm not seeing anybody submiting anymore questions. So we're probably going to just shut this down if we don't see anything else coming in there, we go.

06:23:29 PM
Is there a specific number of courses/credits student has to take each semester if that student is receiving Traina Scholarship?
So courses related to scholarships do they have to take a specific number to maintain their scholarship. So students are receiving merit scholarships. I believe are required to complete at least 7 units total in the first year and 8 units total each academic year. After that, so typically planning on taking a full course load for each semester will will keep you on track for that which is also going to keep you on track for completing your 32 units to graduate.
Adam Keyes
06:23:54 PM
Yes, all merit based scholarships require 7 units to be completed in year one and 8 each year after.
Anyway, so that's always good to plan for but there is a little bit of a wiggle room in that first year of a student needs to drop a course or withdraw from a course at some point during the first year 7 units is OK. Yes, but we want to be mindful that although that full time o'clock is taken 3 courses in order like Shelly said. Just stay on the track of 4 years to graduate in computer requirements. We strongly suggest of course order four courses each semester.
Yeah, that was a mistake I made not here. But in my undergraduate career. They told me I was full time. I thought I was. I was graduating on time and then I had to hustle a little bit in my sophomore year. 'cause I just assumed that full time men on track to graduate but yeah, 32 units to graduate from Clark and so make sure that you are mindful of that and a little plug for academic advising in the summer.
If you are going to take a course that is not offered at Clark and look to transfer that in get that pre approved before you pay for it. So you might want to take something over the summer to cover requirement that you have. Maybe there's a conflict in your schedule and you want to just take accounting over the summer at another school close to your home make sure that that gets pre approved before you pay for that course and it doesn't end up transferring and there would be.
Still have that education in that knowledge in your mind you will not have credit for help for that here in car.
So we have a new question courses like modern bands have limited slots for the fall semester. Can you take the same course in the spring?
Manraj Singh
06:25:28 PM
Courses like "Modern Dance" have limited slots for the Fall Semester. Can I take the same course in the Spring Semester?
Well, we can guarantee a yes answer because there are some courses that are.
Adam Keyes
06:25:59 PM
many courses are offered in the spring and the fall but it does depend on the department and availability of faculty.
All courses that are offered and some are often the spring. There also cause it offered every semester, but it depends on Department and the availability of the fact of the faculty with in the spring semester. So, we, we have standard courses like Biology, 101 offers every fall and by today, 1:00 or 2:00 in the in the spring. So we can definitely say. Yes, just a quick question like that. But I separate horse like that. We're not sure it depends on the Department.
A good rule of thumb is on the registrar's website. You can actually look at the previous semesters. Course crude as well. So if you're looking at fall 2019 and those are the classes that will be available this fall. You can also look back at Spring 2019? Which of course has passed. But if of course was offered last spring. There's a higher probability that it will be offered again this spring.
All right folks, I do want to thank my colleagues for their time.
Giorgo Caripidis Soto

Private- When will spring 2020 courses be available?
The Spring 2020 courses question is coming up. When will those be available again right before pre registration in the November so you should start to see the anticipated course grid for spring 2020. That's right. We're talking about 2020 in November of 2019 when you start to meet with and discuss things with your FYI instructor who again is your faculty advisor until you declare make and the registers office notify every student as to when they will be posted and when they are posted so you will be notified as to.
Wait. I have to take a look and what's available, so at least you have a sense of what will be offered, an what you would want to register for?
I never going to log off I will make sure I get this recording out to folks and we will certainly be available via email, either at the Dean of students office or these fine folks working in actual academic advising work instead of me, making up an answer and hoping that somewhere in this recording when I send it back to you so feel free to hit us up with any questions or anything. You might need to know over the next few weeks of many of you will have your appointments in the next few days. I know they started today in our.
